It's very easy to follow. So follow that .. and then once you get a hang of it, keep experimenting. ^^

Good start with the BG. Here's a suggestion for your sig though. Try a different color BG. The idea is the make your render more prominent.

Quick one I whipped up using the brushes on your site. I have to admit, the brushes are amazingly cool. I should go download more, hahahaha.

I admit that the font is eh, it's just a placeholder while I move this sig into a higher resolution picture when I have the time.

Err.. that is not my guide.

That's a guide I used while I was learning and it helped me a lot. So yeah, actual credits to the person who wrote that amazing guide. ^^
